You can promote a Telegram channel with paid methods — the official Telegram Ads platform, paid posts in other channels (known in Russia as “posevy”) and placements via Yandex Direct — and with free ones: cross-promotion, shared folders, traffic from your website and social media, and content people forward. None of them works without a well-prepared channel, so start there. Below is an overview of every option as of October 2026, with pros, cons and links to detailed guides.
Step zero: prepare the channel
Traffic only turns into subscribers when a visitor immediately understands what the channel is about and why to join. The minimum: a clear name and profile picture, a description that explains the value, a pinned post and several recent posts. For Telegram Ads this is also a moderation requirement: under the official guidelines, a promoted channel must have a profile picture, a complete description and at least one post within the two weeks before review.
A detailed checklist is in our guide on preparing a channel for advertising, which also covers the first posts and a content plan for incoming audiences.
Telegram Ads: official advertising
Telegram Ads shows short sponsored messages below the latest post in public channels with 1,000+ subscribers, as well as in bots and search. You pay per 1,000 impressions (CPM), and targeting is built on channels, topics and audiences rather than users’ personal data. The basics are explained in What Is Telegram Ads.
- Via resellers in euros — the main option for businesses: a starting budget is usually €250–500, plus the reseller fee and taxes. Compare terms in our resellers section.
- Directly in TON at ads.telegram.org — only for promoting channels and bots, with channel targeting only.
- With Stars — for channel and bot owners who hold Stars.
Pros: scale, transparent statistics and no negotiating with channel admins. Cons: moderation, a strict 160-character format and the need to manage bids. The launch process is covered in our step-by-step guide, and text and media requirements in our ad specs reference.
Paid posts in other channels
A paid post is an ad about your channel that you buy from another channel’s admin, directly or through an ad exchange. The format is more flexible than Telegram Ads: long text, images, a native tone in the author’s voice. But the channel owner sets the price, and you have to check audience quality yourself — post reach, engagement rate and subscriber dynamics in TGStat or Telemetrio.
Price benchmarks from exchanges and agencies are in our article on Telegram channel ad prices, and a comparison with official ads in Telegram Ads vs channel ad buys. You can look for placements in our channel catalog.
An important restriction in Russia: since 1 November 2024, channels with more than 10,000 subscribers that are not on the Roskomnadzor (Russian media regulator) register may not carry advertising. Before buying a post in a large Russian channel, check that it is registered.
Yandex Direct and other ad networks
Ads in Telegram channels are also available through Yandex Direct, the main ad platform in Russia. According to ppc.world (July 2025), Direct added a mode where the advertiser picks channels by name, audience size, engagement and cost per view, and pays for actual post views. The ad looks like a regular channel post with an ad label and stays in the feed for 48 hours.
The advantage is a familiar interface and ruble invoicing for Russian companies; the drawback is that you can only choose channels connected to Yandex’s network. Details are in our article on Telegram ads via Yandex Direct.
Free methods
Cross-promotion
Two or more channels of similar size and related topics publish posts about each other. It costs nothing, but there are risks: a partner may have an inflated audience, and frequent promo posts erode your own readers’ trust. Vet partners as carefully as you would when buying paid posts.
Shared folders
Telegram lets you share a folder with a list of channels through a single link, so a user can add the whole collection in a couple of taps. Authors team up in themed folders and promote them together. It works well at launch, but subscribers from folders are often less engaged than those who came from a specific post.
Your own platforms and content
- Website, newsletter and social media. A channel link in your site header, email signature and profiles is the cheapest source of warm audience.
- Telegram search. Public channels can be found by name and username, so a keyword in the name helps organic traffic.
- Content people forward. Roundups, how-tos and original data get shared more often, and every forward brings new readers.
- Similar channels. Telegram shows recommendations of similar channels, so an active channel in a clear niche can gain subscribers from them.
Free methods are slow, but they bring the most loyal audience and lower your average cost per subscriber once you add paid sources.
Legal context in Russia in 2026
This section applies to promotion targeting Russia. According to ppc.world and RBC, on 25 March 2026 Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) said that distributing ads on resources with restricted access is prohibited under the Russian advertising law, but for Telegram and YouTube there is a transition period until the end of 2026 during which liability will not be applied. According to eLama (August 2026), since 1 April 2026 Roskomnadzor has been restricting Telegram in Russia: media and files load more slowly, and availability varies by region and carrier.
Russian ad labeling requirements (erid tokens and reporting to the state ad register) still apply — see our article on ad labeling in Russia and the legal overview in Is Telegram advertising legal in Russia. This is not legal advice: check regulators’ current position with a lawyer before major spending.
How to choose and combine methods
| Method | Cost | Speed | Control | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Telegram Ads | budget from €250–500 via resellers | high | bids, targeting, statistics | moderation rejections, rising CPM |
| Paid posts | price per post set by the admin | high | manual channel choice | channels with fake subscribers |
| Yandex Direct | pay per view | medium | choice of channels in the network | limited list of channels |
| Cross-promotion | free | medium | agreement with partner | low-quality partners |
| Folders | free | medium | low | passive subscribers |
| Content and own platforms | time for content | low | full | slow growth |
A practical approach: prepare the channel, run a small test in several paid sources, calculate the cost per subscriber and the share who stay after a month, and scale whatever pays off. How to calculate these numbers is explained in our article on Telegram Ads metrics.
FAQ
What is the fastest way to promote a Telegram channel?
Paid methods bring subscribers fastest: Telegram Ads and paid posts in other channels. Telegram Ads is easier to scale, while paid posts give more freedom in presentation. Growth speed still depends on how well the channel is prepared for new readers.
Can I grow a channel for free?
Yes, but more slowly: cross-promotion, shared folders, links from your website and social media, a search-friendly name and content people forward. Free methods are usually combined with a small paid test.
How much money do I need to start Telegram Ads?
Via resellers in euros, a starting budget is usually €250–500 plus the reseller fee and taxes. A TON account at ads.telegram.org has a lower entry point, but you can only promote channels and bots and target only channels.
How do I avoid buying ads in a channel full of bots?
Check post reach relative to subscriber count, engagement rate and subscriber dynamics in TGStat or Telemetrio: sudden spikes and low reach are warning signs. Start with one post and calculate the actual cost per subscriber.
Do shared folders work?
Folders help you get your first subscribers without a budget. But some people add the whole collection and never read the channels, so judge not only growth but also post reach afterwards.
Is it legal to promote a Telegram channel in Russia?
According to the FAS statement of 25 March 2026, Telegram has a transition period until the end of 2026 during which liability for advertising will not be applied. Labeling rules and registration of large channels still apply. The situation is changing, so follow the news and consult a lawyer if needed.
