Telegram Ads and channel ad buys are two different ways to advertise on Telegram: with Telegram Ads you buy impressions of a short ad through the official auction, while with a channel ad buy you pay a specific channel’s admin to publish a full post. Telegram Ads is easier to scale and manage by the numbers; ad buys give you a native, full-length post but require manual work and channel vetting. Below is a comparison by price, control, scale, ad labeling and risks.

How Telegram Ads and channel ad buys differ

Telegram Ads is Telegram’s official ad platform. An ad of up to 160 characters appears below the latest posts of public channels with 1,000+ subscribers, in bots and in search. You don’t negotiate with channel owners: you pick placements or audiences in the ad account and pay per 1,000 impressions. More in what is Telegram Ads.

A channel ad buy (in the Russian-speaking market it’s called a “posev”, literally “seeding”) is a sponsored post you buy from a channel admin directly or via an ad exchange. It appears in the feed as a regular post: long text, images, video and several links. You agree on the price, publication time and how long the post stays in the feed with the admin.

Comparison by key parameters

Parameter Telegram Ads Channel ad buys
Pricing model CPM auction: bid per 1,000 impressions fixed price per post, negotiated with the admin
Format text up to 160 characters, a button, optional image or video full post of any length with media and links
Where it’s seen below the latest posts, in bots, in search in the channel feed, as a regular post
Who sees it everyone except Premium subscribers all subscribers who scroll the feed, including Premium
Channel size 1,000+ subscribers any
Scale hundreds of channels in one campaign each channel is a separate deal
Minimum budget usually €250–500 via a reseller the price of one post in the chosen channel
Fake audience risk you pay for impressions, not promised reach a channel may have fake subscribers and inflated views

Price: CPM vs. a fixed price per post

In Telegram Ads you set your own bid per 1,000 impressions. The minimum is about €0.7–1 in a euro account for most topics, 0.1 TON in a TON account and 50 Stars in a Stars account. Actual spend depends on how many impressions your bid wins. Through a reseller, the budget also carries the reseller fee (usually 15–20%) and, for Russian advertisers, VAT on that fee. Details in how much Telegram Ads costs.

With ad buys, the admin sets the price. To compare it with Telegram Ads, convert it to CPM: post price / average post reach × 1,000. Take reach from the channel’s statistics for recent weeks, not from the admin’s promises. After the post goes out, calculate the actual CPM and cost per subscriber from real views and joins — that way you can compare both channels using the same metrics described in Telegram Ads metrics.

Control and scale

Telegram Ads gives you more control over the numbers: you see impressions, clicks, joins and spend for each ad, and you can pause weak copy, raise the bid or add placements at any time. You scale a campaign by widening the list of channels and topics, without negotiating with each admin.

Ad buys give you more control over the message: a long post can explain the product in detail and show screenshots and testimonials, and an author’s native recommendation often feels warmer than a sponsored message. But scale is limited by manual work — finding channels, negotiating, approving copy, paying and checking publication for each post separately.

Ad labeling and legal points (Russia)

If you target a Russian audience, both types of ads must be labeled under Russian law: the creative gets an ERID token through an ad data operator, and placement data is reported to Russia’s ad registry (ERIR). In Telegram Ads, resellers often label ads automatically. With ad buys, the advertiser and the channel admin arrange the labeling, and the post must include an “Ad” mark, advertiser details and the token.

In addition, Russian channels with more than 10,000 subscribers must be registered in Roskomnadzor’s list, and ads can’t be placed in unregistered channels of that size. The Russian competition authority’s (FAS) March 2026 position on advertising on resources with restricted access concerns advertising in Telegram as a whole, so assess the risks for both approaches; a transition period without penalties runs until the end of 2026. Risks of each approach

Channel ad buys

  • Fake audiences. Bot subscribers and inflated views make reach fictional. Before buying, check subscriber growth, post reach and engagement in analytics tools such as TGStat and Telemetrio from our services section.
  • Broken agreements. The post may go out at the wrong time, be deleted early or be pushed down by the next ad.
  • Prepayment. Admins are often paid upfront, and getting money back if terms are broken can be difficult.

Telegram Ads

  • No guaranteed placement. Even when you select a specific channel, your share of impressions depends on the bid and competition.
  • Format limits. 160 characters and strict moderation make it hard to explain a complex product.
  • Not everyone sees it. Premium subscribers don’t see ads, and the ad only reaches those who scroll to the end of the feed.

When to choose which, and how to combine them

  • Telegram Ads fits when you need a steady flow of subscribers or traffic, metric control and scale matter, and your product can be explained in two sentences.
  • Channel ad buys fit when the product needs a long explanation, a specific author’s recommendation matters, or you want small channels under 1,000 subscribers where Telegram Ads doesn’t run.

The two approaches complement each other well. A workable scheme:

  1. Run Telegram Ads on a broad list of channels and see where CPS and retention are best.
  2. Buy posts in the best-performing channels with a detailed message — their audience has already shown interest in your topic.
  3. Use separate invite links or start parameters for each source so you can compare them fairly.
  4. Allocate budget by the actual cost per subscriber or lead, not by gut feeling.

FAQ

Which is cheaper: Telegram Ads or channel ad buys?

There’s no universal answer: the price depends on the topic, the channels and audience quality. Compare both by actual CPM and cost per subscriber, converting the post price into CPM based on real reach.

Can I use Telegram Ads to appear in a specific channel?

Yes, targeting lets you select specific channels with 1,000+ subscribers. But impressions aren’t guaranteed: your share depends on your bid and competition with other advertisers.

Do channel ad buys need to be labeled?

For ads aimed at a Russian audience, yes, just like Telegram Ads. The post must include an “Ad” mark, advertiser details and an ERID token, and data is reported to ERIR through an ad data operator.

How do I vet a channel before buying a post?

Check subscriber growth history, average post reach, reactions and mentions in analytics tools. Sudden subscriber spikes with no visible reason and reach that doesn’t match the channel’s size are reasons to walk away.

Can I run ad buys and Telegram Ads at the same time?

Yes, and it’s common practice. Telegram Ads helps find channels with a responsive audience, and posts in the best of them let you explain the product in detail. Just tag each source with its own link.

Do Premium users see sponsored channel posts?

Yes. A bought post is a regular post in the channel feed, so all subscribers see it, including Premium users. Telegram Ads are not shown to Premium users.
